Hans Christian Andersen (2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875) was a Danish author and poet, best known for his fairy tales such as "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Mermaid". He published more than 200 tales, plays, novels and travel writings; his stories often blend fantasy, melancholy and moral undertones. Andersen's tales have been translated into many languages and have had a lasting influence on children's literature worldwide.
